While its headquarters are located in Cologne, the institute also has an office in Berlin. The institute's weekly newsletter, ''ドイツ語:Informationsdienst des Instituts der deutschen Wirtschaft Köln'' (''iwd''), carries articles on economics, society, and social policy, as well as analysis and economic data. Its current director is Michael Hüther, former general secretary for the German Council of Economic Experts and former chief economist for DekaBank. The IW is a Member of the „Network of Private Business Organizations“ which includes similar institutions from Europe, the Americas, Australia and Asia. It is a member of the advisory board of the "Europe's World" Magazine.
